FM meets Pedersen over efforts to end Syrian crisis

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, on Sunday discussed with the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen, efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

Safadi and Pedersen stressed the importance of concerted efforts to achieve progress on the path to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis and address its repercussions.

Safadi said the Kingdom continues to work with the United Nations and international and regional partners to push a political solution to end Syria crisis, preserve its unity, restore its security and stability, and create the necessary conditions for the voluntary and safe return of Syrian refugees.

This joint endeavor also aims to remove terrorism from Syria and address consequences of the humanitarian, security and political crisis and restore Damascus role in the region, according to Safadi.

Safadi valued the UN efforts in this regard, stressing the importance of its role in efforts to end the crisis.

In addition, Safadi briefed the UN envoy on the challenges facing the Kingdom as a result of the continuing Syrian crisis and the increasing refuge burdens.

Pointing to the “growing” dangers of drug smuggling from Syrian territory into Jordan, Safadi indicated that the Kingdom will take “all necessary” measures to eliminate this danger and protect its security and national interests.

Safadi warned of the difficult repercussions of the drop in international support for Syrian refugees and the refugee-hosting countries and communities, adding that providing a decent living for refugees is a shared responsibility of the host countries and the international community.

Pedersen, for his part, updated Safadi on his efforts and recent meetings aimed to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

Stressing the importance of continuous Jordan-UN cooperation in this field, Pedersen lauded the Kingdom’s “remarkable” humanitarian role in hosting Syrian refugees and providing them with a decent life.
