FM, Italian counterpart hold round of strategic dialogue

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi and Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio held a round of strategic dialogue in Rome on Monday.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti, and Director of the General Intelligence Department (GID), Maj. Gen. Ahmad Husni, and their Italian counterparts participated in the round.

In this first round of the strategic dialogue conducted by the two friendly countries, keenness to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields, and to increase coordination in efforts to confront regional and common challenges, and efforts to achieve security and stability, was emphasized.

During the meeting, both ministers discussed steps that the Kingdom and Italy will take to increase cooperation in the economic, trade, investment, defense and security fields, within the framework of the signed agreements, and in a manner that creates wider areas of cooperation.

Safadi and Di Maio reaffirmed that bolstering bilateral ties and increasing coordination is a strategic goal that Jordan and Italy will work to achieve as it serves common interest, and has positive impact on efforts to resolve regional crises.

The Palestinian issue topped the regional aspect of the strategic dialogue, where Safadi stressed the centrality of the Palestinian cause, the key issue that the region won’t enjoy lasting security, stability and peace without resolving it on the basis of the two-state solution that guarantees the end of the occupation and the establishment of the independent, sovereign Palestinian state with occupied Jerusalem as its capital on the pre-June 4, 1967 borders to live in peace and security alongside Israel.

Safadi said that the status quo in which there is no political horizon for a two-state solution cannot continue, stressing the need for concerted efforts to re-launch serious and effective negotiations to achieve the two-state solution, and to find an economic horizon that mitigate the suffering of the brotherly Palestinian people.
