FM, German counterpart talk int’l action to stop Israel’s violations in Jerusalem

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, stressed the importance of reaching an “effective” international action to protect Jerusalem, its holy sites, its inhabitants, and international law against the illegal Israeli practices and their dangerous repercussions on security and stability in the region and globally.

Speaking during talks with German counterpart, Heiko Maas, on Sunday, Safadi said Israel bears responsibility for the dangerous escalation in Jerusalem, adding that stopping escalation is the way to stop the illegal, provocative and inhuman Israeli practices against the Palestinians and their rights and against the sanctities in occupied Jerusalem.

Safadi said displacement of Palestinian citizens from their homes in Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah area would be a “flagrant” violation of international law and international humanitarian law and a crime that Israel should not be allowed to commit.

According to international law, Safadi said Israel, as the occupying power, is requested to respect the existing historical and legal status quo and does not have the right to displace Palestinians.

Safadi also warned of the serious Israeli violations in Al-Aqsa Mosque, and demanded Israel, as the occupying power, to respect the existing historical and legal status quo in the holy sites and stop attacks on worshipers and their right to worship.

Safadi urged the international community to move “effectively” to stop the Israeli attacks on worshipers and its violation of the right to worship and protect the existing historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem’s holy sites.

Safadi lauded the “clear” position expressed by Germany and other European countries in refusing to displace Palestinians from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah area and reject settlements and other illegal steps that violate international law and rights of Palestinians, which push the region towards more escalation and tension.

The duo discussed international efforts to stop the escalation in Jerusalem and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories, and agreed to continue joint coordination and consultations.

In a related context, Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates continued its international contacts and with world relevant organizations and institutions to form a “firm” position in confronting the Israeli attacks and violations on Al-Aqsa Mosque and protect Palestinians’ rights in Sheikh Jarrah area.
