The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi met Tuesday with the ambassadors of the European Union countries and the Head of the European Union Delegation in Jordan to discuss boosting bilateral cooperation, the latest developments on the Palestinian issue and regional and international developments.
During the meeting, Safadi pointed to the strong and deep-rooted Jordanian-European strategic partnership, underscoring the need to continue strengthening it in all fields.
The minister also reviewed the outcomes of the recent meetings of His Majesty King Abdullah II, which included a visit to the United States, the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership, the Jordanian-Egyptian-Iraqi summit in Baghdad, and the Jordanian-Egyptian-Palestinian summit in Cairo.
On regional and international developments, Safadi highlighted the Palestinian issue, and the efforts aimed at finding a “real political horizon” that would relaunch serious and effective negotiations to achieve a just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the two-state solution and in accordance with international law and international legitimacy resolutions. He stressed the need to continue propping up the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and to hold an international conference in support of the UN agency next November.
Safadi lauded the European Union’s supportive position of the two-state solution, as well as its backing of international efforts to reach a just and comprehensive peace and its ongoing support to the UNRWA to continue providing its services to Palestinian refugees.
Safadi also stressed the importance of bringing about calm in the occupied Palestinian territories, halting settlement construction and land confiscation and respecting the legal and historical status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites, especially the Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif. He underscored the need to work with all partners to relaunch serious negotiations that would lead to the two-state solution.
On other regional issues, the minister spoke on the need to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis, the need to strengthen and support Iraq’s stability, and the need for concerted efforts to preserve Lebanon’s security and stability and support its infrastructure, pointing to recent Jordanian efforts to provide aid to Lebanon.
For her part, the head of the European Union delegation and a number of ambassadors of the European Union stressed the importance of the partnership with the Kingdom, and the Jordan’s key role in the region, and the need to continue strengthening relations in all fields.
