Amman: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, welcomed European Union Vice President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, during his visit to the Kingdom. The meeting focused on enhancing Jordan-European ties and addressing regional conflicts, marking Borrell’s final visit in his current role.
According to Jordan News Agency, the discussions between Safadi and Borrell covered a range of topics including the illegal Israeli actions in Gaza and Lebanon, which threaten regional peace. They also addressed the decline in foreign aid and concerted efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis. At a joint press conference, Safadi acknowledged Borrell’s efforts to strengthen Jordanian-European relations, highlighting the recent decision by the Jordanian-European Partnership Committee to elevate their ties to a strategic partnership.
Safadi expressed his gratitude to Borrell for his commitment to international law and humanitarian values, urging
an end to Israeli aggression in Gaza. He reiterated the Kingdom’s stance on halting aggression and addressing the humanitarian crisis as prerequisites for achieving lasting peace through the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state based on 1967 borders.
Emphasizing the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, Safadi highlighted the urgent need for aid, referencing Jordan’s recent aid delivery operation. He insisted on the necessity of opening land crossings for effective aid distribution and called for respecting the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrants against Israeli leaders.
Borrell, in turn, praised Jordan’s stability and wisdom, noting the EU’s financial commitment of 500 million euros to support the Kingdom. He emphasized the EU’s dedication to strengthening their partnership and supporting Jordan in various sectors, while condemning the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and advocating for the two-state solution.
The meeting concluded with both leaders emphasizing the importance of justice, in
ternational law, and coordinated efforts to address regional challenges and enhance bilateral cooperation.
