FM continues meetings with foreign ministers, officials in New York

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi, on Friday, held a series of meetings with a number of his counterparts and officials participating in the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

According to a ministry statement, Safadi discussed with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President, Josep Borrell, the outcomes of the 14th meeting of the Association Council of the European Union and Jordan which took place in Jordan last June, in addition to a wide range of Middle East issues in the forefront of which is the Palestinian cause, the Syrian crisis and the refugee issues.

Safadi along with his Dutch counterpart Wopke Hoekstra discussed ways to develop bilateral cooperation in various fields and within the framework of partnership with the European Union, in addition to regional and international developments and efforts to resolve crises, according to the statement.

Safadi also discussed with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis and address its consequences, and movements made to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis and halt its catastrophic repercussions.

The two diplomats, according to the statement, also discussed challenges facing Jordan as a result of hosting 1.3 million Syrian brothers, and the challenge of drug trafficking.

Talks between Safadi and Lavrov covered the necessary steps to stabilize the situation in southern Syria, namely, the U.N. Security Council Resolution No. 2642 related to the aid delivery system to Syria across the borders.

The two ministers also discussed developments related to the Palestinian cause, and efforts to return to a serious and effective negotiations to achieve a just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the two-state solution, and stop the illegal Israeli measures.

Safadi along with Arab foreign ministers of the Arab Communication Group on the Ukrainian crisis, held talks with Lavrov, focusing on resolving the Ukrainian crisis in accordance the international law and the U.N. Charter, the statement said.

Safadi also held talks with Counselor of the U.S. Department of State Derek Chollet, focusing on the strategic partnership between the two countries.
