Farmers: Cold Snap Inflicts Heavy Damage to Jordan Valley Crops

Amman: Large crops were damaged in the Northern Jordan Valley by an arctic snap that hit Jordan early Tuesday, according to farmers.

According to Jordan News Agency, the cold wave that affected farmland across the Northern Valley region west of Irbid inflicted damage to vegetables and fruit trees and caused financial losses to farmers in terms of quantity and quality of their produce.

Farmers reported particularly heavy damage to exposed vegetables, banana trees, tropical fruits, such as avocado and papaya, and citrus crops. They noted that the current cold spell came after another cold wave that hit the region in December.

Farmers have called on authorities to assess frost-damaged crops and compensate them to survive the current season.

Northern Jordan Valley Agricultural Director Mohammad Naeem told Jordan News Agency that committees had already conducted an initial survey of damage from freezing, which was worse in Al Shuna Al-Shamalia, Wadi Al-Rayan, and Al-Zouriya along the Jordan River.
