Brussels: The European Commission has unveiled an initial humanitarian aid budget of £1.9 billion for the year 2026. This funding aims to address the urgent needs of 239 million people globally who require humanitarian assistance, amidst a backdrop of declining contributions from major donors.
According to Jordan News Agency, the Commission highlighted that this aid will focus on providing life-saving support in critical areas. The allocation includes food assistance, emergency shelter, basic healthcare, protection for vulnerable populations, and educational support for children in regions affected by crises.
The aid package designates £557 million for West and Central Africa, targeting the Sahel region, the Lake Chad Basin, northwest Nigeria, Central Africa, Southern Africa, the Great Lakes region, and the Horn of Africa. An additional £448 million is earmarked for the Middle East, with a particular emphasis on the Gaza Strip to uphold a fragile ceasefire, alongside support for Iraq, Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon.
