Envoy highlights Jordan’s role in achieving regional peace, security

Azerbaijani Ambassador Eldar Salimov stressed the importance of Jordan’s role under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II to achieve security, peace and stability in the region and the world.

During a press conference held on Wednesday, on the occasion of assuming office as Azerbaijan’s ambassador to the Kingdom, Salimov also underlined the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

He described the Jordanian-Azerbaijani ties as ‘distinguished and exceptional,” adding that his country is looking forward to developing them in various fields, especially as the two sides have embassies in both countries. He noted that the two countries will celebrate in 2023 the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, adding that they have many things in common such as culture and religious and historical values, which are a motivation for furthering cooperation.

He pointed to the ongoing coordination and consultation between the two countries, which are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as Azerbaijan is also the chair of the organization’s Non-Aligned Movement. He voiced his appreciation for Jordan’s support to Azerbaijan’s issues based on the resolutions of international legitimacy.

The envoy also pointed to bilateral cooperation in the educational and cultural field, stating that Azerbaijan allocates a number of grants annually to Jordan as part of the OIC’s country grants.

On economic cooperation, Salimov voiced commitment to increasing and strengthening it in various fields, underscoring the importance of exchanging trade and media delegations and businessmen to promote investments and trade. He pointed out that the joint higher committee between the two countries is yet to meet due to the Covid-19 pandemic, assuring that it will be held soon. In this regard, he said that there are many cooperation agreements signed, highlighting their importance in strengthening and developing relations, especially in the tourism field.

The envoy also pointed to the possibility of operating a direct airline between the two countries, which had been delayed due to the pandemic, is now being discussed, underlining its importance in increasing the volume of cooperation and tourism exchange.

Salimov presented his country’s growth and development in various agricultural, tourism and economic fields, noting that the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev recently laid the cornerstone for a huge commercial project to establish the first free zone in Azerbaijan.
