The Ministry of Environment held a preparatory meeting ahead of Jordan’s participation in the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29), which will be launched in Baku, Azerbaijan next month.
The dialogue, which was held Monday under the auspices of Minister of Environment Dr. Muawieh Radaideh, in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), went over the conference’s key axes and the most important outcomes achieved in the previous two editions of COPs in Sharm El-Sheikh and Dubai.
Radaideh stressed the importance of youth engagement in various discussions on environmental issues and climate change, including the 2024 Local Youth Climate Change Conference (LCOY), noting that a preparatory meeting was held for the youth team participating in the COP 29, as representatives of Jordan’s youth under the official Jordanian delegation.
During the meeting, projects, which will be launched at the Baku conference were presented, primarily enhancing regi
onal climate action in the Middle East and North Africa region that will include 5 countries, led by Jordan, and implemented by the Islamic Development Bank, in partnership with the GGGI.
The participants also stressed the need to raise readiness with regard to reducing natural disasters under Jahez (Ready) project, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
Furthermore, they highlighted response to the Climate-Refugees Nexus (CRN) Initiative, launched by Jordan, and adopted as a main solution for the COP28 Declaration on Climate, Relief, Recovery, and Peace.
