Amman: The Ministry of Environment has entered into a cooperation agreement with Amman Vision Treatment and Recycling (AVTR) to initiate the "Recycling Banks Facilities" Project. This initiative is designed to enhance the waste management system in Amman and promote practices of a circular economy and environmental sustainability.
According to Jordan News Agency, the project aims to encourage waste sorting at its source by setting up specialized centers in strategic locations throughout Amman, especially in densely populated areas. These centers will focus on collecting high-value recyclable waste such as plastic, paper, metals, and electronic waste. The initiative will employ a direct purchase system from citizens, aiming to reduce the disposal of these materials in containers that ultimately end up in landfills.
During the signing ceremony, Minister of Environment Dr. Ayman Suleiman highlighted the project's importance in improving waste management and promoting sustainability in Jordan. He emphasized that the establishment of recycling banks signifies Jordan's commitment to adopting innovative ecological solutions that minimize environmental impact and bolster the circular economy. The project also aims to involve citizens actively in waste sorting at the source, transforming waste materials into valuable economic resources.
Dr. Suleiman noted that the ministry is collaborating with the private sector and national institutions to develop an advanced waste management infrastructure, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals and Jordan's environmental vision.
Amjad Anasweh, CEO of AVTR, remarked that the recycling bank project signifies a substantial shift in the waste management culture in Amman. By fostering sorting practices at the source, the project transforms waste from an environmental liability into an economic opportunity. Anasweh expressed pride in partnering with the Ministry of Environment on this national project, which aims to increase recycling rates, empower workers in the informal sector, and create new job opportunities in an organized and safe environment.
The recycling bank facilities will feature urban designs that respect Amman's environmental character and will be available in different operational sizes to meet the needs of various areas. This initiative aims to boost community engagement in sustainable waste management practices and raise environmental awareness.
The project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities, support local development, provide income sources for broad societal segments, improve the city's overall appearance, and enhance environmental performance. A comprehensive feasibility study conducted prior to the project's launch confirmed its economic and operational viability, highlighting the growing need for innovative waste management solutions in Amman.
