EMRC Hosts IAEA Mission for Nuclear Safety Review in Jordan

Amman:The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) is currently hosting an Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to thoroughly assess Jordan's national legislative, regulatory, and oversight framework for nuclear safety and radiation protection.

According to Jordan News Agency, the mission, which began on October 31, involves 14 international experts and will continue until November 10. This week's agenda included technical meetings, document reviews, discussions, and field visits to various government entities and institutions involved in Jordan's nuclear and radiation sectors.

EMRC Chairman Ziad Saayedeh stated that hosting the mission underscores Jordan's dedication to enhancing the effectiveness and independence of its regulatory system. The review offers an opportunity for an objective evaluation and aims to identify areas for improvement and development, thereby ensuring the highest standards of safety for people and the environment.

The mission's focus includes assessing national practices, examining legislative and regulatory frameworks, licensing procedures, inspection and oversight mechanisms, and the coordination and cooperation among relevant authorities. At the conclusion of its work next week, the mission is expected to present its main findings, observations, and recommendations.

This initiative builds on the ongoing cooperation between Jordan and the IAEA, following a 2017 international follow-up mission that evaluated progress since an earlier review in 2014. These efforts highlight Jordan's commitment to refining its regulatory system, boosting efficiency, and aligning with international best practices.
