Earthquakes kill 3,685 people in Turkey, Syria

The death toll from Monday’s devastating earthquakes in Turkey has risen to nearly 2,921, the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) announced on Tuesday.

According to the Andalou Agency, an official from AFAD said that the total number of injured has climbed to 15,834.

Meanwhile, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) cited the Health Ministry as saying that the number of earthquake victims has risen to 764 deaths and 1,448 injuries in the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama, Idlib, and Tartus.

A powerful quake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale hit Turkey and Syria Monday morning, followed by a 7.6-magnitude aftershock, killing and injuring thousands of people.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said that an earthquake of 5.6 magnitude struck central Turkey on Tuesday, at a depth of 2 km.
