Jordan is home to more than 1.2 million persons with disabilities, almost 15 percent of the overall population, an “alarming figure” whose causes need to be addressed.
President of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD) Prince Mired bin Ra’ad revealed the number of persons with disabilities in Jordan in a meeting with the Senate Labour and Social Development Committee to promote employment for persons with disabilities.
Prince Ra’ad cited the Persons with Disabilities Rights Law (20) 2017 that has strategies to employ persons with disabilities, emphasizing the need for an inclusive education system, adding this should be preceded by making schools accessible.
The meeting emphasized the need to bolster the of persons with disabilities’ political lives and involvement in the decision-making process, as it is “weak” in the kingdom.
Head of the Committee Senator Issa Murad emphasized the importance of taking into consideration the persons with disabilities needs in the workplace.
Secretary-General of the HCD Muhannad Azzeh said he is keen on cooperating with the public and private sectors to employ persons with disabilities, highlighting the HCD is working on habilitating and training persons with disabilities for the market.
