Depression forecast to bring rain over weekend

The weather on Thursday is expected to be cold in much of the country, except in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Aqaba where it will be pleasant, with clouds at various altitudes and southeasterly moderate winds, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in its daily brief.

As we head into Friday, the Kingdom will be affected by an air and wet depression centred over the Egyptian coast, bringing cold and cloudy weather with a chance of light and scattered showers during daytime in the southern region, the JMD added.

Toward night, rainfall will gradually extend to cover other regions and may turn heavier in some areas, including the city of Aqaba, accompanied by thunder storms and hail at times and making flashfloods in the valleys and lowlands, the department predicted, noting that winds will be southeasterly moderate to brisk, blowing dust in the Badia.

On Saturday, cold and cloudy conditions will remain along with heavy downpours, associated with thunder and hail at times, causing floods in the valleys and low-lying areas, especially in eastern and southern regions, the JMD further said.

The highs in Amman and other highlands across Jordan today will range between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius, dropping at night to 5C or even 3C in the southern highlands. In the Gulf city of Aqaba, it will be warmer with mercury levels reaching a high of 21C and a low of 12C.
