Date exports to Qatar up 8.5pct in 9 months

Qatar’s imports of Jordanian dates totaled more than 82 tons in the first nine months of 2022, according to official figures.

The latest data on the Qatari Planning and Statistics Authority’s website indicated an increase of 8.5 percent in the dates imports by the end of the third quarter from 75 tons in the same period of 2021.

In 2021 and 2020, respectively, a total of 100 tons were imported by Qatar from Jordan, while 78 tons were shipped in 2019.

Qatar imports all kinds of dates from Jordan, but mostly Medjool dates, which, in the last few years, have become widely popular and highly demanded in Qatar’s and the region’s markets.

Jordan exports two kinds of dates to Qatar: Medjool and Barhi. The estimated land planted with these two types is around 35 square kilometers aligned with the Jordan Valley all the way to Aqaba.

There are some half a million palm trees in the Kingdom, producing approximately 30,000 tons. Most of the production gets shipped to Gulf countries as well as some Arab and European markets.
