Council of Church Heads in Jordan Praises Amendments to Denomination Councils Law

Amman:The Council of Church Heads in Jordan has expressed its gratitude to King Abdullah II, Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, and the Cabinet for approving amendments to the 2014 Law on Christian Denomination Councils.

According to Jordan News Agency, the Council issued a statement on Sunday praising the Cabinet's approval of the 2026 draft law, which amends the legislation governing Christian denomination councils and has been referred to the National Assembly for further constitutional procedures.

The Council highlighted this move as a significant national step demonstrating the Jordanian state's commitment, under Hashemite leadership, to safeguarding the rights of all Jordanians and respecting religious specificities. It emphasized the principles of citizenship, justice, and equality within a state governed by the rule of law and institutions.

The statement underscored that Christians in Jordan are an integral part of the country's social fabric, history, and identity. They are active participants in the nation's development and protection of its achievements, with Jordanian citizenship providing a common foundation for equal rights and duties, reinforcing national unity and peaceful coexistence.

The Council commended the cooperative spirit among Christian churches in drafting the proposed amendments, leading to a unified draft law agreed upon by the churches. The amendments focus on issues such as wills, inheritance, and adoption to meet the needs and aspirations of Christian communities, promoting stability and reassurance in family matters.

The Council expressed confidence that the Parliament, including the Senate and the House of Representatives, would fulfill its responsibilities by approving the draft law according to constitutional procedures, allowing it to take effect.

Gratitude was extended to all contributors, including official, ecclesiastical, and legal bodies, for their efforts in achieving consensus through dialogue. The Council concluded its statement with prayers for Jordan's continued security and stability, the protection of King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II, and the success of state institutions in serving the nation's interests.
