Conference on economic opportunities in transport sector kicks off

A three-day conference, which was organized by the Senate in cooperation with the German Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Foundation, on economic opportunities in the public transport sector has been launched on Sunday evening in the Dead Sea.

The conference discusses the challenges that the public transport sector faces in Jordan and aims to determine the extent of its impact on issues including economic development, investment promotion, enhancing the competitiveness of the national economy and achieving safe and affordable transport, in addition to its impact on the climate and environment.

Inaugurating the event was Senate President Faisal Fayez, who said that despite the strategies and plans that were put in place to address the challenges in the public transport sector, the sector still suffers from “weak points and the absence of a real transport system that serves citizens.”

Accordingly, “it is now time to come up with progressive solutions and plans under a specific timetable to address challenges,” he underlined, adding that the necessary funding should also be provided to implement these solutions under a partnership between the public and the private sectors.

Fayez underscored the need to remove obstacles while simultaneously ensuring that the legislation governing the transport sector is consistent with environmental laws, given the global trend to address climate change.

He lauded the government’s and the Ministry of Transport’s great efforts to enhance the sector, pointing out the importance of coming up with large-scale projects with the aim of ensuring the implementation of plans and strategies.
