A two-day conference titled “Christians and Christianity in the Middle East”, on Thursday stressed the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship over the Christian holy sites in Jerusalem which strengthened the presence of Christians in the Middle East region.
The participants at the conference in Amman, organized by Catholic Center for Studies and Media and the German Konrad Adenauer Stiftung company, stressed that the Hashemite Custodianship over the Christian holy sites in Jerusalem preserves the historical, religious and legal existence of the Christian churches in Jerusalem.
They added that the Custodianship forms a shield of protection of Christian identity in the region and an extension to the Omary Covenant that took place between the Patriarch Sophronius and Caliph Omar Ibn Al Khattab.
The conferees stressed that the Christian religion, which carries a humanitarian message, started from this land, explaining that the presence of Christians in the East, especially in the Arab region, Palestine and Jordan, is a basis for preserving the Arab Christian identity, which offers a unique diversity to Arab societies and promotes the spirit of harmony and love.
