Amman: Minister of Government Communication Mohammad Momani emphasized that modern technology imposes new responsibilities on media professionals, necessitating elevated professional practices and continual development of communication tools in an era characterized by rapid digital innovation. Speaking during a panel discussion titled “Future Opportunities for Developing Communication and Media Sciences Using Modern Technology,” part of the International Conference on Bridging Horizons, Momani articulated the need for platforms that facilitate dialogue and idea exchange to shape visions beneficial for the media sector.
According to Jordan News Agency, Momani highlighted the challenges posed by the unprecedented flow of information, which requires media professionals and the public to critically assess news consumption patterns and verify accuracy to distinguish credible journalism from misleading content. While acknowledging the benefits of social media in terms of speed and interactivity, Momani cautioned about the ethical challenges it presents and the need for careful management to maximize benefits and minimize harm.
Momani underscored the importance of digital media as a supportive tool that empowers journalists to pursue truth amidst vast amounts of inaccurate information. He emphasized the complementary relationship between traditional and digital media, asserting that the sector’s future depends on the strength of its content rather than merely the technology used to deliver it. Additionally, Momani called for regulatory frameworks to govern the use of technology and artificial intelligence, ensuring protection of society while safeguarding freedom of expression.
Ali Rawdan, an artificial intelligence and digital transformation expert at the University of Jordan, stated that AI’s emergence is a natural outcome of massive data accumulation and technological advancements. He highlighted AI tools’ role in enabling journalists to perform tasks like editing and research efficiently, thus allowing them to focus on creative and editorial work. Rawdan stressed that AI aids in verifying accuracy but does not replace journalists, whose experience is crucial for high-quality news production.
Similarly, ART Keys CEO Wasfi Safadi noted the crucial role of dialogue platforms in developing media and communication. He pointed out the ethical and value-based challenges posed by social media’s rapid communication capabilities. Safadi called for content tailored to digital platforms and noted that AI’s integration into media production has not surpassed 60% according to global benchmarks, highlighting the need for modern legislation and enhanced skills among media professionals.
Ataf Rawdan, Director General of Radio Al Balad, discussed the challenges local media institutions face amid digital transformation. She pointed out that technological advancements require new skills and modern production approaches, while limited funding and a gap between journalists’ experience and AI capabilities present significant obstacles. She cited international examples of AI’s growing role in media, such as an Italian newspaper’s temporary replacement of its editorial staff with AI, which received positive feedback.
The conference, gathering distinguished Arab and international experts, offered a platform for dialogue and collaboration, focusing on evidence-based practices and interdisciplinary innovation. Over two days, participants explored more than 40 research papers on topics ranging from digital media and professional ethics to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, attracting educators, researchers, policymakers, and community stakeholders dedicated to interdisciplinary research.
