Amman: Mohammad Momani, Government Communication Minister and Government Spokesperson, emphasized the pivotal role of national media in protecting society, its values, and national unity against threats such as hate speech, character assassination, rumors, and misleading content prevalent on some social media platforms.
According to Jordan News Agency, Momani highlighted the chaos on social media platforms, which have become tools for spreading rumors and false information, targeting countries, and misrepresenting their stances on Arab issues, particularly the Palestinian cause. This was discussed during a meeting hosted by the Jordan News Agency (Petra) with a delegation of news agencies from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
Minister Momani reiterated Jordan’s commitment to the security, prosperity, and stability of the Gulf states, emphasizing that these efforts are aligned with its media and political orientations. This statement was made in the presence of Secretary General of the Communication Ministry Zaid Al-Nawaiseh, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Jordan News Agency Nabil Gheishan, Director General of the News Agency Fairouz Mobaideen, Director General of the Media Commission Bashir Momani, and Director General of Al Mamlaka Channel Jaafar Al-Zoubi.
He further advocated for the creation of a unified Arab framework to safeguard public opinion. This framework would compel social media companies to curb deceptive information and regulate the creation of fake identities or accounts by individuals not of legal age, adhering to global standards.
Momani stressed the importance of Arab media integration to counter systematic campaigns, unify discourse, defend essential topics, and strengthen the shared Arab stance. He noted that media education and community awareness are the first lines of defense against disinformation, enabling people to distinguish between genuine and fake news.
The minister also described dedicated media as a strategic tool for protecting Arab national security, fostering common consciousness, and advancing people’s interests. He reaffirmed Jordan’s consistent position on Palestine since the onset of the war on Gaza, emphasizing the need to halt aggression, allow aid into the region, and maintain the relief effort’s independence from other battle effects.
Momani reiterated Jordan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people, asserting that its humanitarian actions in Gaza and the West Bank are a duty. He noted the connection between Jordanian and Gulf national security, rooted in shared history, interests, and destiny, and praised the Gulf’s supportive stance on Palestinian rights.
“Jordan always stands with its Gulf brothers, and the positions of both sides are aligned in a relentless effort to support the nation’s causes,” Momani concluded. He emphasized that collaboration and mutual trust enable better handling of regional and global challenges. His Majesty the King and His Highness the Crown Prince have consistently directed support for Gulf brethren and the promotion of a unified state that serves their interests and prosperity.
The GCC news agency delegation expressed confidence in the visit’s success, highlighting the knowledge-sharing and media competency-building between the Gulf and Jordan in editing, photography, digital media, and technical work. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining objectivity and trustworthiness in news dissemination, values that distinguish Arab news organizations and are diligently upheld.
