Canada lauds efforts of Jordan, countries in region to support Syrian refugees

Canada’s International Development Minister Harjit Sajjan lauded Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey’s generous support in hosting large numbers of Syrian refugees.

“Canada is committed to continuing its work with the international community and the Syrian side to end this crisis through a sustainable political solution,” Sajjan said Tuesday in a statement.

The Canadian minister announced the allocation of $229 million to fund humanitarian and development assistance to Syria and the region this year, explaining that $196 million of this funding will be allocated to provide food assistance, protection, water, sanitation, hygiene and health services.

He added that the remaining $60 million will be channeled towards development assistance in the region, with a focus on empowering women, promoting gender equality, providing economic growth, and supporting climate action.
