Cabinet mulls public procurement of staples, price control

The Cabinet on Wednesday discussed measures which the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply can legally take to import staple foods and control prices in the local market.

Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply Maha al-Ali told the Cabinet the law allows the ministry to procure staples either directly or through third parties, whether they are government-owned or private companies.

She indicated that the Civil Consumer Corporation had been directed to provide basic materials at reasonable prices and to increase its stock of staples, adding that the ministry has secured a strategic stock of wheat and barley sufficient for more than 17 and 11 months, respectively.
