Cabinet fixes bread prices until 2023 amid global grain price hike

A Cabinet decision announced on Sunday fixed the prices of bread until the end of 2023 amid a global rise in grain prices.

According to the decision, the price of large-sized white pitta bread will remain at 320 fils, while small-sized white pitta bread will remain at 400 fils, and Taboon, Saj, and other types of bread will remain at 350 fils.

The decision also included continuing to provide JD4 in cash support to non-mechanical bakeries (stone and semi-automated), specifically those that use one tonne or less of flour daily.

According to official figures in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply, government subsidy on wheat last October stood at JD254 per ton, in light of fixing bread prices and to spare citizens the burden of global wheat and barley price hikes.

Additionally, during the session, the Cabinet approved the executive plan of the 2019-2025 National Youth Strategy, its programs, the general framework for follow-up, evaluation and quality assurance and finance planning.
