Cabinet Approves Compensation for Damage and Strategic Energy Reforms

Amman: The Cabinet on Sunday approved compensation for Jordanians whose homes, businesses, or vehicles were damaged by falling debris and drones amid ongoing regional tensions. Compensation will be determined by technical committees formed by the Ministry of Interior.

According to Jordan News Agency, to bolster energy security, the Cabinet has exempted fuel oil supplied to the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) from taxes and fees, along with liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports and a floating storage vessel set to arrive in Aqaba later this year. These measures aim to strengthen strategic reserves and cushion the blow of global price volatility, with authorities tasked with facilitating permits for the vessel's operation.

The Cabinet has also approved plans to proceed with a 700-megawatt combined-cycle power plant (IPP7) in partnership with Etihad Development Company, as part of efforts to meet growing electricity demand. This project involves private-sector participation, with the government holding a 49 percent stake.

In the media sector, the Cabinet endorsed the Digital Media Regulation Bylaw for 2026 and related legislative amendments to modernize regulation, enhance content quality, and support investment. The Bylaw introduces licensing requirements for professional digital media activities while exempting personal social media use.

Additionally, the Cabinet approved a plan for the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) to issue Islamic bonds (sukuk) worth up to JD1 billion in phases, to support infrastructure and improve financial sustainability.

To support tourism, the government has extended exemptions on entrance fees to archaeological sites under the "Our Jordan is Paradise" program through the end of 2026, while continuing to subsidize trips to boost domestic tourism and local economies.

The Cabinet's approval of a 2026 economic empowerment plan for National Aid Fund (NAF) beneficiaries aims to transition eligible families from financial assistance to sustainable employment through targeted programs and partnerships.
