Brussels: Amani Azzam, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, chaired the ministerial meeting on the second day of the 35th Meeting of the Energy Charter Conference held in Brussels. The gathering was attended by representatives from 30 member states and observers, where Azzam emphasized the critical need for a sustainable energy future and identified the opportunities to mobilize green investments.
According to Jordan News Agency, Azzam stated that the modern Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) plays a crucial role in safeguarding investments and offers essential guarantees for investors in clean energy technologies. She highlighted the importance of leveraging the ECT to create a stable and predictable investment environment. Azzam showcased Jordan’s achievements in renewable energy, particularly in solar and wind sectors, which have significantly increased their contribution to the nation’s electricity mix from about 1% in 2014 to approximately 27% in 2024.

ns to further boost this rate to over 30% by 2030, with a focus on advanced electricity storage technologies such as the new Pumped Hydroelectric Energy Storage (PHES) system. This initiative aims to enhance the country’s ability to manage renewable energy effectively. Additionally, Azzam stated that Jordan is positioning itself as a major player in the global green hydrogen market with a potential production capacity of 0.6 million tonnes per year by 2030, aiming to increase this to 3.4 million tonnes by 2050.
Efforts are underway in Jordan to develop electric transmission infrastructure and improve electrical interconnections with neighboring countries to establish a sustainable and efficient energy system. Azzam called for regional and international collaboration to address climate change challenges, referring to the outcomes of the Conference of the Parties (COP 29). She concluded that Jordan’s initiatives will contribute to achieving a more sustainable and resilient future for everyone.
