Arab League Supports Syria’s Sweida Roadmap, Commends Jordan’s Role

Amman: The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, welcomed the adoption of a roadmap to resolve the crisis in Syria’s Sweida Governorate, emphasizing Syria’s territorial unity and full equality of all citizens in rights and duties.

According to Jordan News Agency, Aboul Gheit praised the efforts of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and its ministers, particularly Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, for facilitating the settlement through the Amman meeting, which brought together Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Al-Sheibani and U.S. Special Envoy Thomas Barrack.

Gamal Rushdi, the Secretary-General’s official spokesperson, stated that the roadmap represents an important step toward stabilizing southern Syria. He highlighted that it affirms Sweida as an integral part of Syria and stresses that the governorate’s residents are full Syrian citizens with equal rights and duties.

Rushdi conveyed Aboul Gheit’s call for any settlement in Sweida or other Syrian regions to preserve Syria’s societal diversity, ensure equality under the law, and uphold citizenship principles. The roadmap includes detailed measures for a sustainable resolution in Sweida, along with a clear mechanism for verification, monitoring, and tracking developments, with the aim of implementing obligations precisely to address the roots and causes of the crisis and prevent its recurrence.
