Arab League Condemns Attack on Qatari LNG Tanker and Abuse of Palestinian Prisoners

Amman:The Arab League has issued a condemnation regarding an attack on the liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker Al Mayeda, managed by Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat), while it was navigating the Arabian Gulf.

According to Jordan News Agency, the Arab League emphasized that such attacks on commercial vessels are violations of international law, posing threats to maritime navigation and endangering the lives of crew members.

The league expressed its solidarity with Qatar and supported efforts to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable. It highlighted the need to safeguard freedom of navigation, international trade, and commercial shipping, cautioning that repeated attacks on energy carriers could jeopardize global supply chains, market stability, and coastal environments. The league also called for increased regional and international cooperation to protect commercial waterways and reduce tensions.

In a separate statement, the Arab League condemned the ongoing human rights violations and systematic abuses against Palestinian detainees from Gaza, held in the Rakefet section of Ramla Prison. Several prisoners have recently suffered injuries and burns.

Labeling these abuses as a "blatant violation" of international humanitarian law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and the UN Convention Against Torture, the league suggested that these acts could amount to crimes against humanity and necessitate international accountability. The league demanded an end to all forms of mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners and called for unrestricted access for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to inspect Ramla Prison. It also advocated for an independent international investigation, immediate medical care for the injured, and the release of ill and wounded detainees.

Reasserting the centrality of the Palestinian cause to Arab unity, the league urged the international community and UN bodies to meet their obligations to protect civilians and ensure accountability for those responsible.
