Amman:The 38th International Technical Conference of the Arab Fertilizer Association (AFA) commenced in Amman, uniting experts and specialists from 30 Arab and foreign countries. The conference is centered on technological innovation, industrial integration, and sustainability within the fertilizer industry.
According to Jordan News Agency, the three-day event is hosted by the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company (JPMC) under the theme "Beyond Production The Fertilizer Industry Transformation Summit." It features an exhibition with over 30 companies showcasing fertilizer manufacturing technologies, equipment, and advanced industrial solutions.
The conference aims to enhance innovation, sustainability, and industrial collaboration in the Arab fertilizer sector, which supports global competitiveness and contributes to food security. JPMC Chair Mohammad Thneibat, who presided over the opening, advocated for the establishment of a joint Arab research and technology center dedicated to the fertilizer industry. This center would bolster regional innovation, develop advanced manufacturing technologies, and increase the economic value of natural resources.
Thneibat highlighted the strategic advantages of Arab countries in the global fertilizer industry, such as substantial reserves of phosphate, potash, natural gas, and sulfur, as well as established industrial expertise and access to international markets. However, he emphasized that natural resources and manufacturing facilities alone are not enough to achieve global leadership without investing in technology development, scientific research, and innovation.
He urged Arab industrial leaders to establish a regional research center with sustainable funding and partnerships among companies, universities, and research institutions. Thneibat also expressed JPMC's readiness to sponsor and support the center, particularly in advancing phosphate-based fertilizers.
Thneibat underscored scientific research as a strategic investment in competitiveness, economic security, and future generations. He emphasized aligning academic research with industrial needs and market demand, while proposing research priorities such as exploring marine resources for sustainable fertilizers, applying AI in manufacturing processes, and using nanotechnology to develop specialized fertilizers.
AFA Board Chair Abdulwahab Rawad noted the challenges facing the global fertilizer industry, including geopolitical tensions, energy market volatility, and climate change. He stressed that industrial success must reflect innovation and positive environmental and social impacts, urging Arab countries to strengthen regional integration and develop their own technologies.
The conference also announced its 2026 awards, with Helwan Fertilizers Company receiving the Corporate Sustainability Award and Ashraf Shaltout of EFIC receiving the Applied Research Award. Thneibat inaugurated the technical exhibition, which showcases fertilizer manufacturing technologies and solutions, facilitating the exchange of expertise and exploration of partnerships.
