Amman:A two-day conference focused on the role of Christians in shaping the future of the Middle East commenced in Amman, examining political, social, and economic challenges, as well as religious coexistence and inclusive citizenship.
According to Jordan News Agency, the event, titled "Christians of the East Partners in Building the Future," is organized by the Catholic Center for Studies and Media in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. The conference was inaugurated by Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Imad Hijazin, representing Prime Minister Jafar Hassan. Hijazin emphasized Jordan's experience with Muslim-Christian coexistence and the importance of preserving religious and cultural diversity.
Hijazin highlighted Jordan's ongoing efforts to promote interfaith dialogue and safeguard holy sites, including the UNESCO-listed Baptism Site of Jesus Christ at Bethany Beyond the Jordan. He also discussed plans for commemorating the 2,000th anniversary of Jesus Christ's baptism in 2030, viewing it as an opportunity to enhance religious tourism and international partnerships.
Father Rifaat Bader, director of the Catholic Center for Studies and Media, underlined the need for Muslim-Christian cooperation to combat extremism and uphold social stability. He called for greater recognition of Christians' contributions to Middle Eastern societies, while also defending the true image of Islam, as emphasized by His Majesty the King in international forums.
German Ambassador Bertram von Moltke commended the solidarity shown by Jordanians following a terrorist attack on a church in Karak Governorate. Thomas Rachel, Germany's Federal Government Commissioner for Freedom of Religion or Belief, reiterated Germany's support for Jordan, warning against hatred and extremism.
