Abul Samen participates in 2nd UfM Transport Ministerial Conference

Amman, Minister of Public Works and Minister of Transport, Maher Abul Samen, on Thursday participated via teleconference in the second Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Transport Ministerial Conference.

The UfM Transport Ministerial Conference was co-chaired by the EU and Jordan and attended by senior EU officials including EU Commissioner Adina Valean.

This conference comes to complete the road map to determine work priorities by adopting a common regional agenda, continuing regional cooperation in the field of transport, exchanging best practices, and developing projects by providing them with technical support and financing to advance sustainable and inclusive urban development and develop a regional transport network that promotes social and economic development and regional integration in the Mediterranean basin, Abul Samen said in a keynote speech.

Abul Samen added that the adoption of the UfM Ministerial Declaration the draft of which was agreed upon, comes as a continuation of concerted efforts and an emphasis on the outcomes and conclusions of the previous Ministerial Conference held in Brussels in 2013, as well as completing the realization of the main objectives of the regulatory reform and to approach all relevant transport sectors (sea, land, railways, civil aviation and urban transport) in order to build a Trans-Mediterranean Transport Network (TMN-T), link it to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), and enhance the importance of interdependence between the countries of the southern Mediterranean, and with the countries of the European Union, and expanding dialogue with other regions.

He pointed out that the declaration comes as a supportive tool by setting a clear vision for the sustainable and integrated development of the various transport sectors, through implementing a new Regional Transport Action Plan (RTAP) 2021-2027 in accordance with the RTAP’s Constitutive Regulations, mobilizing all available funds, including European Union instruments and the support of the European Investment Bank as well as European and international financing institutions, in a coordinated manner, in order to provide support for the implementation of the Mediterranean Contact Network, engaging all international financing institutions in the implementation phase of the RTAP, through joint political support for the development of a safe, secure, sustainable, efficient and interconnected transport system based on consistent transport rules and an integrated and multimodal Mediterranean transport network.
