The League of Arab State on Thursday welcomed the resolution of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) against acts of religious hatred.
Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said in a statement that the resolution reiterates the responsibility of everyone to publicly condemn calls for religious hatred, including the desecration of sacred books. He also denounced the Swedish authorities' allowing the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran on the first days of Eid Al-Adha.
Aboul Gheit renewed the call to all countries to adopt this resolution, and work to combat the escalating waves of hatred between peoples and followers of different faiths.
On June 28, an Iraqi refugee in Sweden burned pages of a copy of the Holy Quran in front of the largest mosque in Stockholm on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha, which sparked condemning reactions in the Islamic world, and Muslim-majority countries summoned Swedish ambassadors to protest against this act.
