Amman:The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) has officially launched the JO-Ecolabel, a pioneering environmental certification scheme in Jordan and the region. This initiative aims to promote green growth and enhance sustainable production and consumption patterns.
According to Jordan News Agency, the JO-Ecolabel was developed over a period of two years in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply, and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). The program assesses the environmental impact of products and services throughout their entire lifecycle using scientific metrics.
Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman highlighted that the JO-Ecolabel establishes a national framework for sustainable development, which enhances resource efficiency and increases the export competitiveness of Jordanian industries in international markets where ESG and environmental compliance are increasingly essential.
The initiative is designed to integrate environmental protection into core economic activities, aiding Jordan in transitioning towards a circular economy, reducing production waste, and creating new opportunities for green investment. Acting Director-General of JSMO Safa Momani mentioned that the launch aligns with Royal directives to build a modern, resilient economy. She emphasized that the certification provides consumers with reliable data and encourages manufacturers to optimize the use of raw materials, energy, and water.
German Ambassador to Jordan Dr. Bertram von Moltke praised the collaborative effort that led to the project. He drew comparisons to Germany's "Blue Angel" eco-label and noted that transparent environmental certifications offer a competitive edge for Jordanian exporters, especially in the context of the upcoming Jordan-EU Investment Conference.
