Garment and Leather Exports Experience 3.4% Increase Reaching JD1.24 Billion

Amman:Exports from Jordan's leather and garment industries rose by 3.4% during the first eight months of 2026, reaching JD1.236 billion compared to JD1.196 billion in the same period of the previous year. This growth is highlighted in the latest figures released by the Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI).

According to Jordan News Agency, the United States remains the largest market for these exports, accounting for 77% of the total, valued at JD957 million, a slight decrease from JD965 million the previous year. Despite competition and cost challenges, increased shipments to European and North American markets have compensated for the decline in exports to the U.S.

Exports to Canada increased by 13% to JD39 million, while shipments to the Netherlands rose by 30% to JD35 million. Additionally, exports to Belgium, the United Kingdom, and Germany saw growth of 4%, 4%, and 17% respectively. Markets like Mexico, Italy, and the United Arab Emirates also recorded growth, albeit with relatively modest export values.

Ehab Qadri, representing the sector at JCI, attributes the sector's sustained international market presence to its global brand relationships, production capabilities, and compliance with quality standards. He also notes the Jordan-US Free Trade Agreement's role in attracting investment and connecting factories to global supply chains.

Knitted or crocheted apparel and clothing accessories made up approximately 95% of the sector's exports, increasing 4.6% to JD1.177 billion. However, non-knitted apparel exports declined by 41.3% to about JD20 million, and carpet exports decreased slightly. Other textile articles saw a significant increase of 79.4% to around JD5 million.

Qadri emphasizes the importance of diversifying manufacturing activities and expanding supporting industries. He highlights the need for continued investment in technology and workforce development to meet evolving global requirements. Additionally, he calls for the expansion of domestic production of manufacturing inputs to enhance local value added and supply-chain resilience.

Future development depends on initiatives under Jordan's Economic Modernization Vision, particularly focusing on the garment industry cluster project. The JCI is collaborating with government and industry stakeholders to improve production capabilities, investment environments, and export opportunities. Aligning vocational training with factory needs and supporting technological innovation are also crucial for meeting international standards.
