Jordan and Australia Strengthen Bilateral Ties During State Visit

Canberra:Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Safadi met with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Tuesday as part of King Abdullah II's state visit to Australia. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations and broadening cooperation in various sectors.

According to Jordan News Agency, the ministers emphasized the significance of the King's visit in deepening cooperation between Jordan and Australia. They discussed opportunities to expand collaboration in areas such as economic affairs, trade, investment, defense, security, tourism, and education, as well as coordinated efforts on regional and international matters.

In a separate event, Safadi received a Jordanian archaeological artifact on behalf of King Abdullah II. This follows Australia's decision to return the artifact, discovered through joint archaeological efforts at Wadi al-Hammah in the Tabqet Fahel area. The handover took place at the National Gallery of Australia, underscoring the commitment of both countries to cultural heritage preservation.

The artifact, dating back to approximately 12,000 BC, is part of a set considered the oldest known large-scale sculpture in the world. While the other pieces remain in Jordan, this particular piece was transferred to Australia in 1985 under a bilateral agreement. The return ceremony was attended by Australian officials, highlighting the ongoing cooperation in archaeological research and preservation efforts.
