Accra:Criteria and conditions for granting licenses and permits for passenger transport services in Jordan's underserved areas will be implemented early next week, as announced by the Land Transport Regulatory Commission (LTRC).
According to Jordan News Agency, the new framework, approved by the LTRC board under Law No. 4 of 2011, aims to expand public transit access, curb illegal private taxi operations, and provide clear guidelines for operators seeking permits in remote or low-demand areas.
Starting next week, interested parties can apply for permits by specifying their target routes, fleet size, and vehicle types. Approved operators will have three months to meet technical specifications before receiving one-year renewable permits. In cases where multiple operators apply for the same route, the LTRC will conduct a "competitive" technical review to evaluate the applicants.
For an area to qualify as underserved, it must lack regular transit services, face high operating costs relative to revenue, or have had previous service invitations unanswered. The regulations also enable the Passenger Transport Support Fund to subsidize fares and cover operating losses in low-profit routes, ensuring the long-term viability of services.
