Amman:UNESCO, UNICEF, UNRWA, and the International Labour Organization (ILO) issued a joint statement on World Teachers' Day 2026, praising educators for their crucial role in Jordan's development and future.
According to Jordan News Agency, this year's observance, themed "Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Futures," commemorates the 60th anniversary of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
The statement emphasized the importance of teachers as the foundation of successful education systems, promoting creativity, critical thinking, and inclusive societies. It commended Jordanian educators for their dedication to supporting all students, including refugees and vulnerable learners, amidst complex environments influenced by digital transformation and diverse learning needs.
The agencies highlighted that international data shows nearly all primary school teachers in Jordan are professionally trained. Recent initiatives have provided professional development to over 3,250 educators, more than 260 vocational education instructors, and over 3,500 teachers in 161 UNRWA schools nationwide.
Additionally, the Jordan Education Strategic Plan (2026-2030) focuses on teacher empowerment, educational quality, AI-driven digital readiness, and system inclusion, forming the basis of Jordan's comprehensive education reform agenda.
The UN agencies underscored the need for ongoing commitment to enhancing teachers' working conditions, professional autonomy, career growth, well-being, and involvement in decisions affecting their profession. They reaffirmed their partnership with the Government of Jordan and national stakeholders, expressing gratitude to all Jordanian teachers: "Investing in teachers is investing in Jordan's future."
