Jordan and Iraq Discuss Environmental Cooperation and Climate Action

Cairo:Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman of Jordan met with Iraqi Minister of Environment Sarwa Abdulwahid Qadir to discuss enhancing environmental cooperation and addressing shared climate challenges between the two nations.

According to Jordan News Agency, the meeting took place during the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs conference at the Arab League General Secretariat's headquarters. The ministers focused on significant environmental challenges, including the effects of climate change and the impact of dust and sandstorms, which have economic, health, and environmental repercussions. They emphasized the importance of coordination and exchange of expertise to mitigate these phenomena.

Both ministers highlighted the necessity of mobilizing international support to tackle climate change and sandstorms, enhancing their countries' adaptive capacities, and utilizing available climate financing mechanisms.

Furthermore, Jordan and Iraq plan to sign a memorandum of understanding between their environment ministries during the upcoming Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31) in Antalya, Turkey. This agreement aims to strengthen cooperation and the exchange of knowledge in areas of mutual environmental and climate interest.

The meeting underscores the commitment of both countries to strengthen bilateral cooperation and foster Arab coordination in addressing environmental and climate challenges.
