Jordan to Review Legal Framework for Older Persons

Amman:The National Council for Family Affairs (NCFA) is set to assess Jordan's legal and regulatory framework concerning the rights of older persons, collaborating with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the National Committee for Older Persons.

According to Jordan News Agency, the upcoming study will evaluate the adequacy of current legislation, pinpoint legal and regulatory gaps, and propose recommendations to enhance protections for older persons. This review comes in anticipation of the International Day of Older Persons, celebrated annually on October 1, with this year's theme being "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives."

NCFA Secretary-General Mohammad Miqdadi stated that the study would examine Jordanian legislation related to older persons, assessing its alignment with evolving needs and international standards. The research methodology will include comparisons with international standards and Arab legislation, consultations with government bodies and stakeholders, and the development of practical legislative recommendations.

The findings are expected to assist national authorities in identifying legislative priorities and determining whether Jordan requires a more comprehensive legal framework for the rights and protection of older persons. The study will address issues such as protection from violence, abuse, exploitation, and marginalization, as well as access to healthcare, social protection, participation, and independent living.

ESCWA Population Affairs Officer Sara Salman noted that the assessment would offer specialized analysis of Jordan's legal framework, drawing from regional and international experiences. The cooperation will also focus on adapting policies and legislation to demographic changes and the increasing number of older persons.

The study's results aim to aid policymakers, legislative bodies, and executive authorities in identifying strengths and gaps in the current framework and contemplating potential legal reforms. This initiative is part of the efforts of the National Committee for Older Persons, established in 2012, which coordinates among national institutions to implement and develop the National Strategy for Older Persons and its action plans.
