Amman:The Ministry of Water and Irrigation recently seized several tankers engaged in the illegal dumping of industrial wastewater in the Qastal area, located south of the city.
According to Jordan News Agency, the operation was initiated following technical reports and tips that highlighted abnormal wastewater quality and industrial residues in the local sewage system. A field inspection by the Jordan Water Company (Miyahuna) revealed that a large staging area was being used by tankers to dump wastewater into a pipeline connected to the South Amman Wastewater Treatment Plant. During the investigation, authorities observed three 30-cubic-meter tankers unloading waste within an hour.
Security forces raided the site and uncovered a concealed discharge point hidden inside a zinc-sheet shed, which was camouflaged with dirt and diesel fuel cans. Inspectors traced the illegal discharge pipe directly to a main sewer manhole. Technicians subsequently removed the illegal connection and collected samples for laboratory testing to identify the chemicals involved and assess any potential damage.
Further investigations revealed that the operator had contracts with local factories, charging fees for each tanker to dispose of untreated industrial waste into the public sewage network. This illegal practice poses a significant threat to the wastewater treatment plant. Authorities have initiated legal proceedings against those involved and have referred the case to law enforcement agencies.
