Amman: The Jordanian Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs has hailed the recent decision by the United Kingdom to ban the import of products from Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land. Abdullah Tawfiq Kanaan, the committee's Secretary-General, described the move as a pivotal step in international diplomacy, emphasizing its significance in supporting Palestinian rights and the creation of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
According to Union of OIC News Agencies, Kanaan expressed that the British decision aligns with a growing international consensus, highlighted by a collective statement from 12 European countries. These nations reaffirmed their commitment to a two-state solution and condemned the increasing settler attacks on Palestinian areas amid ongoing Israeli policies of displacement and ethnic cleansing.
Kanaan noted that the British stance marks a notable shift in the country's diplomatic approach, reflecting widespread international dissatisfaction with Israel's aggressive strategies targeting Palestinians. This shift is indicative of mounting global political support for Palestinian rights.
He further commended Western countries' positions against settlements, seeing them as a reinforcement of international legitimacy and law against Israeli government policies. Kanaan praised international adherence to United Nations resolutions, which recognize Palestinian rights and call for their protection.
Highlighting the current global crises and conflicts, Kanaan underscored the necessity of resolving the Palestinian issue to achieve regional and international peace and stability, labeling it a pivotal matter for worldwide equilibrium.
He elaborated that the British and European pressure on Israel to comply with international law mirrors Jordan's stance, which aligns with Security Council Resolution 2334. This resolution, issued in 2016, declared Israeli settlements illegal and invalidated any Israeli alterations in occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.
Kanaan reiterated that Jordan's diplomatic efforts, underpinned by its role and the Hashemite custodianship of Jerusalem's holy sites, remain steadfast in advocating for Palestinian rights, particularly their right to an independent state.
