Amman: His Majesty King Abdullah II received the annual reports on the Judicial Council and Sharia Courts during separate meetings on Monday, assessing their conduct of business for the year 2025. The meetings provided an overview of the current status and achievements of these judicial bodies.
According to Jordan News Agency, King Abdullah II met with Judicial Council President Mahmoud Ababneh to discuss the status of regular courts, the administrative judiciary, and the public prosecution. The King emphasized the importance of advancing the judicial system, focusing on economic chambers to boost a business-friendly environment conducive to investment. He highlighted the need for rapid implementation of a specialized committee's recommendations to modernize the judiciary, including updates to legislation, infrastructure, and technology.
The report on regular courts revealed that approximately 394,000 cases had been settled, addressing around 85 percent of the pending caseload and collecting more than JD34 million. Additionally, more than 3,500 instances involved alternative options to custodial sentences and remand, while the juvenile justice system applied non-custodial measures for over 6,700 sentences.
In a separate meeting, His Majesty met with Chief Islamic Justice Abdul Hafez Rabtah and Higher Sharia Court President Kamal Smadi to review the Sharia Courts' annual report. The King lauded the Sharia Courts for their efforts in elevating the standard of Sharia justice and enhancing citizen services through the development of e-services.
According to the Sharia Courts' report, 87 percent of cases were settled or dismissed, with 71 e-services developed and launched across more than 55 Sharia Courts. The family reconciliation and mediation offices of the Sharia Courts played a significant role in maintaining the cohesion of over 9,000 Jordanian families and successfully resolved more than 35,000 legal disputes through amicable settlements.
The meetings were attended by Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi and the Director of the Office of His Majesty Alaa Batayneh.
