Princess Wijdan Patronizes Opening of Philippine Textile Exhibition “KatHABI’t Ugnayan”

Amman: Her Royal Highness Princess Wijdan Al-Hashemi, President of the Royal Society of Fine Arts, patronized the opening ceremony of the Philippine textile exhibition "KatHABI't Ugnayan: A Textile Exhibit" at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in Amman. The event, attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Rajwa bint Ali, marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Jordan and the Philippines.

According to Jordan News Agency, Philippine Ambassador to Jordan Wilfredo Santos delivered a speech highlighting the exhibition's celebration of Philippine fabrics and the cultural narratives they convey. He expressed gratitude for Princess Wijdan's patronage, noting her significant contributions to art in Jordan and internationally.

Ambassador Santos emphasized that the exhibition is more than a display of fabrics and designs. It represents expressions of identity, history, and community across the Philippines. The showcased textiles, from shimmering pi±a to vibrant traditional patterns, reflect centuries of cultural craftsmanship and the artisans' dedication to preserving their heritage.

The ambassador added that the exhibition serves as a cultural bridge between Jordan and the Philippines, enhancing mutual understanding and respect. It underscores the ongoing efforts to strengthen the friendship between the two countries, celebrating five decades of diplomatic relations.

The eight-day exhibition is a collaborative effort involving the Philippine Embassy in Jordan, the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, the Philippine Textile Research Institute, the Philippine Textile Council (HABI), and Museo Pambata. Ambassador Santos expressed gratitude to these institutions for their role in promoting Philippine textile heritage and fostering cultural ties.

Julius L. Leano Jr., Director of the Philippine Textile Research Institute, emphasized the significance of reviving the Philippine textile industry and showcasing it to a global audience.

Princess Wijdan and Princess Rajwa, along with Ambassador Santos, toured the exhibition to view the diverse collection of fabrics, textiles, and garments. The opening ceremony was attended by a delegation including Ma. Milagros C. Villanueva, President of the Philippine Textile Council (HABI), and Wilma Santos-Huang, President of Museo Pambata.

The exhibition offers a comprehensive journey through the history of Philippine textile production, demonstrating the transformation from natural raw fibers like abaca, pineapple, cotton, and silk into finely crafted fabrics. It also explores the influence of Islamic entry on Philippine textiles.

Attended by Asian ambassadors and other guests, the exhibition highlights the transformation of traditional knowledge and scientific research into globally significant textiles. It demonstrates how Philippine textiles contribute to environmental sustainability, innovation, and economic growth.

The opening ceremony featured a traditional Philippine dance performance by the "Kalinangan Amman" troupe.
