FM, UNHCR High Commissioner Discuss Continued Refugee Support

Amman: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Safadi on Tuesday met with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Barham Salih to discuss means of strengthening joint cooperation and coordination with the UN refugee agency.

According to Jordan News Agency, during the meeting, Safadi and Salih explored ways to enhance existing cooperation and coordination with the UN agency, affirming their commitment to strengthening efforts in this regard. The two sides also addressed the challenges facing the UNHCR due to declining funding and its impact on refugee assistance programs.

Safadi emphasized that securing dignified living conditions for refugees is a shared responsibility for host and donor countries. He highlighted the importance of continued cooperation among donor and host countries and relevant UN organizations to support Syrian refugees, aiming to create appropriate conditions for their voluntary return. Safadi noted that Syria's stability is crucial to regional security and stability.

Furthermore, Safadi stressed the need to invest in creating conditions conducive to refugees' voluntary return through supporting Syria's stability and reconstruction process. In response, Salih commended Jordan's humanitarian role in hosting refugees and providing them with decent living conditions.

Safadi congratulated Salih and reiterated Jordan's aspiration to build on the strong partnership between the Kingdom and UNHCR.
