Amman: The Ministry of Water and Irrigation has unveiled the updated Water Resources Protection Instructions for 2025, providing a regulatory framework that defines water-related permitted, restricted, or prohibited activities based on technical maps and recent scientific studies.
According to Jordan News Agency, the Ministry's Secretary-General, Dr. Jihad Mahamid, emphasized that the guidelines will serve as the primary reference for ministries and institutions in developing plans and approving licenses for facilities and projects, ensuring the quality and safety of water resources remain intact.
During the launch event, attended by German Embassy Representative Sarah Thaqleq and Laura Neuhofen from the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), Mahamid highlighted that the annual per capita water share in Jordan has decreased to less than 61 cubic meters, underscoring the Kingdom's growing water challenges.
Mahamid further noted that the revised guidelines are a strategic effort to restore balance to water resources, particularly groundwater reservoirs, to meet the needs of future generations and address the escalating water deficit.
Thaqleq remarked that water conservation and sustainability have become a national priority, necessitating substantial collective effort and collaboration. She mentioned that Germany is extending its support to the water sector to tackle these significant challenges.
Neuhofen confirmed that the updated version is a result of close technical cooperation with the Ministry, aimed at implementing best practices for managing scarce water resources.
