Amman: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Islamic Relief USA have launched a partnership to develop health programmes supporting refugees and vulnerable communities across Jordan. The announcement was made during a ceremony attended by ministers and representatives from international and local organisations.
According to Jordan News Agency, Islamic Relief USA CEO Ahmed Shehadeh stated that the initiative marks a new chapter in the organisation’s work in Jordan. He highlighted the launch of a global medical programme in cooperation with UNHCR and the Pakistan Medical Association of North America. The programme aims to enhance the quality and sustainability of healthcare services.
Shehadeh mentioned that Islamic Relief USA has invested more than $22 million in Jordan over the past two decades through various initiatives including food and winter assistance, women’s and youth empowerment, and healthcare services, such as mobile clinics serving remote areas. Jordan was selected to launch the new medical programme due to its humanitarian role and continued support for refugees.
UNHCR spokesperson Youssef Taha announced the signing of a new agreement with Islamic Relief USA, which includes a $2.5 million contribution to support UNHCR’s health programmes inside and outside refugee camps. A specialised cardiac surgery team has also arrived in Jordan to implement a medical programme in partnership with the University of Jordan Hospital. Over the course of a week, the team will perform advanced interventional procedures, including stent placements and a number of minor and intermediate surgeries for refugees and members of the host community.
The agreement provides for additional surgical operations aimed at supporting vulnerable patients and improving their access to specialised healthcare, thereby expanding the overall scope and quality of humanitarian services. Both organisations emphasized the importance of their partnership in strengthening protection efforts, alleviating suffering, and promoting sustainable humanitarian initiatives in Jordan.
