Water Ministry Underscores Commitment to 2030 Agenda, SDG 6 Progress

Amman: The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Jihad Mahamid, on Monday emphasized Jordan’s dedication to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He noted that the Kingdom continues to monitor its progress towards these goals through a clear methodology based on internationally recognized indicators.

According to Jordan News Agency, Mahamid, while opening a three-day workshop titled “Capacity Building for Sustainable Development Goal 6 in Jordan (SDG-CDI),” stated that the Ministry has collaborated closely with its partners over the past years. This collaboration aims to advance institutional reforms, digital transformation, and data-driven decision-making, aligning with the National Water Strategy 2023-2040. This strategy embodies a forward-looking vision that incorporates sustainability, efficiency, and resilience into every policy and project, in conjunction with the Water Sector Information Technology Roadmap 2025.

Mahamid also highlighted the United Nations’ recognition of Jordan as a leading country within the capacity building initiative. This selection underscores the significance of the Ministry’s accomplishments and its commitment to sharing expertise and building the necessary capacities for sustainable water management and the integrated implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Spanish Ambassador Miguel de Lucas underscored the importance of joint cooperation and Spain’s support across sectors, particularly in water and sanitation. He acknowledged the measures Jordan has undertaken to advance Sustainable Development Goal 6.

United Nations Resident Coordinator Sheri Ritsema-Anderson remarked that the United Nations is collaborating with the Jordanian government and other organizations to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 and other objectives. This partnership aims to address significant challenges such as water scarcity and climate change. She emphasized that Jordan’s water issue is a part of its Economic Modernization Vision and is considered a security issue, not just a challenge. The workshop aims to discuss these challenges, develop plans, and offer various forms of support.
