Thai King Vajiralongkorn Makes First Visit to China in Five Decades

Beijing: Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn began a historic visit to China on Thursday, marking the first trip by a Thai monarch to the country since the two nations established diplomatic relations in 1975.

According to Anadolu Agency, visuals released by state media showed Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi receiving King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida at Beijing airport for a five-day state visit at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. The visit highlights the significance of this year, as it marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two Asian nations.

During the visit, the Thai monarch is expected to hold separate audiences with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. The discussions will focus on advancing China-Thailand relations, strengthening economic cooperation, and expanding cultural and people-to-people exchanges. These talks are seen as pivotal, given the robust bilateral trade between the two countries, which reached $133.98 billion last year. China continues to be the largest export destination for Thai products.

King Vajiralongkorn’s visit to China marks his first official trip abroad, excluding a visit to Bhutan in April this year, since he ascended to the throne in 2016. This trip underscores the importance Thailand places on its relationship with China as both nations look to foster closer ties in various sectors.
