Minister Cites PM’s Role in Enhancing Food Security Coordination

Amman: Agriculture Minister Khaled Hanafat announced the strategic decision to appoint Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan as chair of the Food Security Council (FSC), emphasizing the government’s commitment to strengthening the national food security system and improving coordination among related institutions and entities.

According to Jordan News Agency, Hanafat highlighted that this appointment signifies food security as a top governmental priority, necessitating direct supervision at the highest levels. He explained that the decision aims to expedite procedures, unify national efforts, and direct policies concerning agriculture, food production, imports, and strategic storage.

The minister outlined the FSC’s objectives to reassess national plans and enhance partnerships with the private sector, civil society, and international organizations to work towards self-sufficiency. The council aims to improve the country’s capacity to tackle global crises and challenges, particularly market fluctuations, global supply chain disruptions, and climate change.

Hanafat also mentioned that his ministry, along with relevant institutions, will continue to support the council with technical and logistical resources. The upcoming phase will introduce new initiatives and projects designed to boost local production, attract investment in the agricultural sector, and enhance the management of essential natural resources like water and agricultural land.

He added that Prime Minister Hassan’s leadership of the council is expected to solidify Jordan’s position as a regional leader in food security management, aligning with the Economic Modernization Vision, the Administrative Modernization Roadmap, and national efforts towards sustainable development.

The minister reiterated the government’s dedication to implementing programs that ensure sustainable food security, stabilize prices, provide safe and adequate food to all citizens, and strengthen the agricultural sector’s resilience against ongoing challenges.
