Bandar Abbas: At least 406 people were injured on Saturday when a massive explosion rocked Shahid Rajaee Port in Iran’s southern city of Bandar Abbas, according to Iranian state media.
According to Jordan News Agency, the incident was due to the explosion of several containers stored in the port’s dock area. A crisis management official told Iranian state television that efforts are underway to evacuate the injured to nearby medical centers.
The television quoted Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Administration official Esmaeil Malekizadeh, who stated that the blast occurred in part of the port’s dock area. Firefighters are currently working to control the blaze.
The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that work at the port has been suspended to allow for firefighting efforts.
